The Spanish training ship “Juan Sebastián de Elcano” is scheduled to pass through the Suez Canal on 25 – 26 May 2021. To mark the event, Spain’s embassy in Cairo has organised a writing contest on the theme “The First Voyage Around the World Magallanes-JSE (1519-1522): the adventure of proto-globalisation”. The length of the work should be 1200 words, and the deadline for submission is 7 June 2021.
The winner will receive a certificate of participation, a book and an invitation to lunch with the Embassy’s Counselor for Cultural Affairs.
Juan Sebastián de Elcano is a Spanish Navy training ship, a ship used to train sailors. It is a four-masted topsail, steel-hulled schooner barque. At 113 metres long, it is the third longest ship in the world, and is the sailing vessel that has sailed the furthest, covering more than 2,000,000 nautical miles (3,700,000 km) in its lifetime.
It is named after Spanish explorer Juan Sebastian Elcano, captain of Ferdinand Magellan’s last exploratory fleet and the man who completed the first circumnavigation of the earth.
