Nearly a thousand Australians will be honoured in Queen’s Birthday ceremonies around the country, Governor-General of Australia Peter Cosgrove said.

Among the honourees is Sudyralian Egyptian psychiatrist Dr Samir Nicholas Ibrahim who has been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his service to psychiatry and to the community.

Dr Ibrahim has been a psychiatrist for 39 years and has practices in Sydenham and Bundoora.

He is an international member of the American Psychiatric Association, and secretary of the family research and interventions section of the World Psychiatric Association.

A fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists since 1997, Dr Ibrahim has served as a Victorian representative on the Family Violence Psychiatry Network Committee since 2014.

Dr Ibrahim, who arrived in Australia from Egypt 25 years ago, is a member the Coptic Christian community and a current lecturer at St Athanasius College. He was elected president of the Australian Egyptian Federation in 2017.

Watani started as an Egyptian weekly Sunday newspaper published in Cairo. The word Watani is Arabic for “My Homeland”. The paper was founded in 1958 by the prominent Copt Antoun Sidhom (1915 – 1995), who strove for the establishment of a civil, democratic society in Egypt, where all Egyptians would enjoy full citizenship rights regardless of their religious denomination. To this day when Watani is published as a weekly paper and an online news site, the objective remains the same. Those in charge of Watani view this role as a patriotic all-Egyptian vocation. Special attention is given to shedding light on Coptic culture and tradition as authentically Egyptian, this being a topic largely disregarded or little-understood by Egypt’s media. Watani is deeply dedicated to offer its readers high quality, extensive, objective, credible and well-researched media coverage, with special focus on Coptic issues, culture, heritage, and contribution to Egyptian society.
