A small fire that erupted in the garbage bins at the convent of the Holy Virgin in the Western Mountain at Assiut, some 350km south of Cairo, was quickly extinguished by the fire fighter trucks stationed at the convent during the Fast of the Holy Virgin when more than 1.5 million people visit the convent.
Fr Philemon, the official spokesperson of Assiut Diocese, said that a limited fire had in the garbage area, explaining that it seemed like someone had thrown a lighted cigarette in a garbage bin causing it to catch fire. The fire spread to the number of bins close by, but the fire fighters quickly contained the matter with no casualties and no damages.
Eyewitnesses said the fire had erupted following the Holy Virgin’s procession that tours the convent grounds, but was put out by the fire fighter squad stationed at the convent. The service and prayers were not disrupted, but continued as usual, televised live to viewers.
