Today, 6 October, marks Victory Day, the day in 1973 when Egypt’s army made the near-impossible crossing of the Suez Canal and breached the ‘invincible’ Bar Lev Line which guarded the Israeli-occupied Sinai. Israel had seized Sinai in the Six-Day War in 1967. The 1973 Crossing of the Canal allowed Egypt to reach a peace agreement with Israel in 1979, and regain Sinai.
