Happy New Year 2023! As we step into the new year, we thank the Lord for guarding Egypt and her people all through the past year, despite the conditions that took the world by storm. We pray that He would see us through the challenges we carry with us from last year, and that He would bless our nation and guide her steps in all what she aspires for in the new year.
Last week I reviewed the issues and topics tackled in the editorials I wrote during 2022, starting with local and domestic issues. Today I resume my review of 2022 by listing the global and international issues. Self-evidently, the Russia-Ukraine War that started in February 2022 took top priority; a close second was the death of Queen Elizabeth II last September and the accession of her son and heir to the throne as King Charles III.
Here is a review of the foreign issues tackled in Watani’s 2022 editorials, listed by topic.
Editorials relating to the Russia-Ukraine War:
- What Putin says on the Russia-Ukraine crisis
- The Russia Ukraine war: What Americans say
- The West’s double standards
- Russia Ukraine war: Restructuring global order
- Russia Ukraine war: Towards a new global order
- The Russia-Ukraine crisis: What Kissinger says
- Western sanctions against Russia open new horizons
- The Russia Ukraine war: What strategy experts say
- Media on Russia Ukraine War: The other side of the coin
- In the spotlight: Russia Ukraine War
- Russia Ukraine War: Will Europeans rebel?
The decease of Queen Elizabeth of the UK:
- Queen Elizabeth’s death: End of an era
- King Charles III: Future of British Crown
Topics relating to Egyptian American relations:
- To President Biden: Actions speak louder than words
- Well said, Mr President
- The West and LGBT rights
Different foreign issues:
- Death of the West
- What an activist says about Israel
- Will Lebanon rise again?
I intend to follow up on the development and aftermath of these issues as we carry them into the new year. We enter 2023 with a world teeming with conflict, a world departing from the single superpower of the US and its European allies, and anticipating the birth of a multi-polar leadership where Russia and China take their place alongside the West. The world holds its breath as it expects the multi-polar world to unfold: will it be governed by the old struggles, power hunger, anger and bitterness that led to the strife and defiance which today threaten to ruin our world? Or will the close level of economic or military power of the various poles lead to a responsible return to the policy of truces and acceptance of the other that governed past eras and had a positive impact on world peace and the human family?
We step into the new year with our eyes on the developments to come.
