As wildfires ravage forests in Greece which is undergoing an unprecedented heat, Egypt has sent two Chinook helicopters to join international help to extinguish the fires.
The more than 150 wildfires, now into their sixth day, are fanned by strong winds, and have been spreading in the island of Evia and areas in the Peloponnese as well as Mani, Messinia and the site of the first Olympic Games, as well as the north of Athens. Two persons were killed, scores were injured, and many have had to be evacuated from their homes.
The Greek authorities and hundreds of firefighters with water-bombing aircraft have been struggling to extinguish the fires.
According to a statement by Egypt’s military spokesman, the General Command of the Armed Forces yesterday sent two Chinook helicopters equipped with advanced fire fighting capabilities to Greece to help. The move comes as per directives by Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, Supreme Commander of the Armed forces, the statement said.
