The killer of a Coptic shopowner in Alexandria has been caught by the police.
The 48-year-old Adel Soliman, an Islamist, was arrested and charged with murdering the CoptYoussef Lamei.
Earlier this week, Lamei was slaughtered while sitting in a coffee shop in front of his shop in Alexandria. He owns a shop that sells nuts in one of Alexandria’s main thoroughfares, Khaled Ibn-al-Walid street. He also uses his shop to illegally sell liquor. Liquor vendors in Egypt must hold a license to sell alcohol.
Video footage from the shop’s CCTV cameras revealed the full crime which, along with the testimony of witnesses, helped the Alexandria police form a preliminary account of what happened. It turned out that the bearded Adel Soliman sneaked into the shop on the evening of Monday 2 January as Lamei sat in the coffee shop opposite his shop. Soliman came up from behind Lamei and slashed his throat twice with a large knife. He directly fled the scene before the victim even fell off his chair. Those sitting around, including the victim’s two sons Tony and Peter, attempted to chase Soliman, but he swiftly jumped into a white microbus that appeared to be waiting for him and fled the scene.
The following day the police found Soliman who was hiding in a non-inhabited area. He is currently being investigated for the crime.
