In the wake of the devastating earthquake that shook Turkey and Syria at dawn on Monday 6 February, claiming some 11,000 lives and causing immeasurable ruin in the two countries, Egypt has dispatched five military planes carrying urgent medical supplies to Turkey and Syria.
Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi called President Bashar al-Assad of Syria and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of Turkey, to extend his condolences for the lives lost, and to offer Egypt’s support to both countries. President Sisi emphasised Egypt’s solidarity with both the Syrian and Turkish peoples, stressing that Egypt will offer humanitarian aid and rescue to help in the international effort to overcome the crisis.
The Presidents of Syria and Turkey expressed their gratitude for President Sisi and for Egypt’s initiative, each stressing the deep historic relations between their respective countries and Egypt.
