The Coptic Orthodox Church in Alexandria today, Tuesday, issued a statement disclaiming responsibility for a flier that has been recently circulating in the west Alexandria suburb of Agami, ever since the Islamist pro-Mursi sit-ins were disbanded by the police last Wednesday. The flier, which was allegedly attributed to the Copts, registered their gloating over the Mursi ouster and the suspension of the 2012 Islamist constitution. It urged Copts to carry on with their “agenda” to expel Muslims from Egypt and to turn their mosques into churches.
The Church’s statement described the language of the flier as “feeble and naïve”, evidence that it was written by a ‘stray group’ in order to spark the fire of sectarian strife, especially during this critical period Egypt is going through. It is the same ‘group’, the statement said, that is responsible for the burning of churches, mosques and State institutions, the group that wishes to burn Egypt in its entirety.
The Coptic Orthodox Church in Alexandria said it saw a need to refute the flier because it expects in the near future more deeds of the same nature, which attempt to create a rift between Muslims and Christians.
