The General Egyptian Book Organisation has recently published a poetry collection Diwan al-Baba Shenouda (Pope Shenouda##s Volume) by Pope Shenouda III who died at 86 last March. The book was compiled and revised by Dr Mohamed Salman. Pope Shenouda was a charismatic figure who was widely loved and revered by Egyptians, Muslims as well as Christians.
Besides the poems written by Pope Shenouda III, the book includes a glimpse on his life and early days in the town of Manfalout in Assiut, Upper Egypt, as well as a study of his poems.
Diwan al-Baba Shenouda is among the few books which handle Pope Shenouda as a poet. Among the poems included in the book are Heroes, A national poem, A whisper of love, Mariam and Martha, Your tenderness O God conquers the hearts.
Pope Shenouda III headed the Coptic Orthodox Church for some 40 years, during which he was highly respected for his spirituality, wide culture, wisdom and sense of humour.
