In memorial for the 20 victims who lost their lives in the bombing of the church of the Two Saints in Alexandria on New Year Eve 2011, a demonstration was held in front of the High Court in Downtown Cairo on the first day of this year. The protest, which was organised by the Maspero Youth Union, witnessed wide participation by the public as well as rights movements including Free Copts, the Coalition of Revolution Youth, the 6 April movement, and activist Alaa’ Abdel-Fattah who was released a couple of weeks ago following some three months of detention.
The protestors stood right in front of the prosecutor-general’s office and held candles and Egyptian flags as they chanted slogans calling for justice. They demanded that a thorough investigation should be conducted into the bombing incident and that the culprits should be caught and brought to justice. It must be noted that, to date, the entire case is frozen.
The investigation conducted by the previous regime directly following the bombing had been declared to point out to the involvement of the Palestinian Geish al-Islam (Army of Islam) in planning the crime which was executed by Egyptians. Nineteen men were caught but, following the 25 January Revolution, they were released for lack of evidence. The case was then close.
