The Coptic Church and community lost Judge Edward Ghaleb on 13 May 2024. Judge Ghaleb passed away in Canada during the time when the Coptic Orthodox Church celebrates the joys of the Resurrection of Christ.

Mr Ghaleb was an Egyptian Judge and honourable Church layman, former Vice President of Egypt’s highest administrative court, the State Council, and former Secretary-General of the Coptic Orthodox Melli (Community) Council.

Pope Tawadros II mourned in a statement the departure of the honourable judge. The statement read:

“The Coptic Orthodox Church, headed by His Holiness Pope Tawadros II, bids farewell in hope of the resurrection to the honourable Judge and layman Edward Ghaleb, former Vice President of the State Council and former Secretary-General of the Melli Council.

“Judge Ghaleb departed our world after long years of serving the nation and the Church with utmost sincerity and fairness. His services included teaching in Church institutes; diverse services in the churches of Shubra and Heliopolis, in addition to his firm and clear patriotic positions that will be remembered throughout history.

“We ask the Lord to repose his soul, and grant condolences to his blessed family, loved ones, disciples, and those he served, believing that the impact of his contributions will endure in the memory of the Church and nation.”

“Sincere condolences to his blessed family and church, and to all his friends and those who enjoyed his loving care and patronage.”

Condolences were accepted by the family on Tuesday 14 May, at the Holy Trinity Hall at the Coptic Church of Virgin Mary in Mississauga, Canada, and funeral prayers are to be held on Wednesday 15 May at noon at the same church.

Condolences will also be received in Cairo on Saturday 18 May at the main hall of the Coptic Church of Georgius and Anba Antonius in Heliopolis.

Judge Ghaleb was husband of the late Amal Latif, and leaves behind three daughters: Raneen who is married to Sherif Mikhail, an engineer; Eman, married to Ihab Alphonse, an engineer; and Fadwa, wife of Ihab Magdy, an accountant. He was grandfather of Anthony and Martina Sherif; and Nour, Kenzy, Karma and Lily Ihab.

Watani started as an Egyptian weekly Sunday newspaper published in Cairo. The word Watani is Arabic for “My Homeland”. The paper was founded in 1958 by the prominent Copt Antoun Sidhom (1915 – 1995), who strove for the establishment of a civil, democratic society in Egypt, where all Egyptians would enjoy full citizenship rights regardless of their religious denomination. To this day when Watani is published as a weekly paper and an online news site, the objective remains the same. Those in charge of Watani view this role as a patriotic all-Egyptian vocation. Special attention is given to shedding light on Coptic culture and tradition as authentically Egyptian, this being a topic largely disregarded or little-understood by Egypt’s media. Watani is deeply dedicated to offer its readers high quality, extensive, objective, credible and well-researched media coverage, with special focus on Coptic issues, culture, heritage, and contribution to Egyptian society.
