The Alexandria branch of the Ministry of Environment rescued an owl trapped in the wall of a building in Alexandria, the Ministry of Environment announced in a press release.
According to Manal Awad, Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of Environment, an individual had reported the owl trapped in the wall. A rescue team was formed jointly between the Alexandria and West Delta Regional Branch of the Environmental Affairs Agency, the Civil Protection Department and the Alexandria Traffic Department. The rescue team headed to the location and rescued the owl using hydraulic ladders.
Following the rescue operation, Dr Awad explained, the owl was examined and found to be in good health with only a minor injury to one of its wings. It was immediately transferred to Alexandria Zoo for treatment and necessary veterinary care until full recovery, after which it will be released back into its natural habitat.
Dr Awad pointed out that the owl is a bird of great ecological importance, playing a vital role in maintaining the balance in ecosystems. It feeds on rodents, mice, and small insects, thus helping control their populations. It also helps protect agricultural crops naturally, eliminating the need for harmful chemical pesticides.
The Minister thanked the man who reported the incident, noting that his behaviour reflects environmental awareness of the importance of wildlife. She explained that community participation is fundamental in supporting State efforts in protecting the environment and preserving biodiversity. She called on the public to help protect endangered species and preserve biodiversity and wildlife by reporting threats to wildlife through a special WhatsApp number allocated to receiving complaints.
