1,200 Sudanese who had taken refuge in Egypt as they fled the war in their country, have voluntarily decided to go back home to Sudan, now that conditions there are stable. They boarded the “Hope Train” in Aswan.
On the Hope Train, operated as part of the Hope Committee’s voluntary return programme, the Sudanese were received by Sudan’s Consul-General in Aswan, Abdelkader Abdullah.
According to a statement issued by the Sudanese Consulate, the Consul-General stressed that the series of trips, which have continued under the umbrella of various initiatives, is in line with the State’s directive to continue the voluntary return programme.
He expressed his gratitude to the Hope Committee for its ongoing efforts and thanked the Zakat Bureau for funding the current trips and for its intention to facilitate the return of 10,000 Sudanese.
For their part, the members of the group thanked the Consul and the Sudanese Consulate for their significant role in organising and overseeing the trip, given their extensive experience and expertise in this field. They noted that the Consulate serves as a gateway for return to the country.
Tuesday morning, 16 June 2026, the Consul General in Aswan witnessed the opening of the High Dam port gate for another group of returnees aboard the ship Sinai, carrying 600 returning passengers.
Director-General of the Nile Valley Authority, Colonel Mohamed Adam, stated that this first group of returnees aboard the ship Sinai would be followed by others during the upcoming period. He noted that close coordination would continue with the “Hope Committee for Voluntary Return” and the Sudanese Consulate in Aswan to ensure the safest, most comfortable, and highly efficient service for all returnees.
