The prosecution office of Burg al-Arab, some 70km southwest Alexandria, has announced that a fire which had erupted two days ago at the monastery of Mar Mina in Maryout was caused by an electric shortcut.
Fire had erupted in a building under construction at the monastery of Mar-Mina and caused extensive damage to the building but no casualties. The civil defence forces put out the fire.
A team of forensics experts and investigators from Alexandria security authority hastened to the site to find out the cause behind the fire.
The building under construction stands close to the collective tombs of the 24 martyrs who lost their lives in the 2011 New Year Eve explosion at the church of the Saints in Alexandria, and the 10 victims of that which took place at St Mark’s Cathedral in Alexandria on Palm Sunday 2017. A monastery source said that the tombs were untouched by the fire.
