The early hours of Friday 14 February saw a fire erupt at the monastery of Anba Shenouda the Archimandrite, known as the White Monastery, in Sohag, some 500km south of Cairo.
The fire left no casualties, and was quickly put out quickly by Sohag firefighters.
Today, 17 February, Anba Eulogius, Abbot of the Monastery issued a statement on the matter.
The statement explained that the fire broke out in the cave canteen at 1:00am on Friday, due to an electrical short circuit, according to an official report.

The fire was contained thanks to the efforts of the Sohag firefighters, leaving no injuries, and with limited losses, the statement said.
Anba Eulogius expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the Director of Sohag Security, the National Security authority, and the firefighters for their prompt response and great effort in extinguishing the fire and controlling the situation.
