As the daily numbers of COVID-19 cases continue to steadily decline in Egypt—yesterday’s figures stood at 103 infections and 19 deaths—the government has allowed Friday prayers in mosques and churches. Accordingly, the Coptic Orthodox Church has allowed Mass on Friday while applying all necessary cautionary measures against COVID-19. Friday is weekend in Egypt and many Copts prefer to go to Church that day, Sunday being a working day. Sunday School and Bible study meetings which are usually held on Friday were not allowed back yet; they continue online, however. But the Church announced reopening of pre-school nurseries.
Coptic churches all over Egypt had already reopened for worship on 3 August 2020 six days a week, but not on Friday in accordance with government decisions. Strict measures of protection against COVID-19 were in force, however.
All churches adhere to the strict protective measures decreed by the Coptic Orthodox Holy Synod in its statement issued on 27 June 2020.
