The police and the military have launched a campaign to put an end to the increasing encroachment against the waters of Lake Burullus in the North Delta since the 25 January 2011 Revolution.
Some 12,000 feddans of the lake were seized by the owners of fish farms, and several dams were erected inside the lake, all in stark violation of the law. The lake constitutes the prime livelihood source of the fisherman who live on it, and who have been most affected by the encroachments.
The recent campaign resulted in the removal of encroachments over an area of some 5000 feddans.
This is not the first time that Lake Burullus is violated. The original lake area of 130,000 feddans has been today reduced to 108,000 feddans, meaning that some 22,000 feddans were seized by investors. Some areas were filled to use for housing, while others were shut to the local fishermen by fish farms.
