A 55-year-old Coptic doctor, Albert Fikry, was found with his throat slit in his clinic in the town of Tala in the mid-Delta governorate of Menoufiya.
The crime, which took place at 3pm on Sunday 2 July, amazed those who knew the doctor who was a well-loved figure famous for his courtesy and willingness to help others. Dr Fikry was alone in Tala working in his clinic; his family resides in Cairo.
A Coptic Church source said it was too early to assess the situation or to claim whether or not the crime carried sectarian overtones, was the work of Islamist terrorists, or was a criminal incident owing to specific motives.
The police are investigating the crime.
Six months ago a Coptic couple were shot to death in their home in Menoufiya, but it was found that they were killed by thieves who attempted to rob their house.
