The Copts of the town of Seresna in Fayoum last Wednesday evening held a protest at St Mark’s cathedral in Abbassiya, Cairo, to protest against their bishop, Anba Abra’am, Bishop of Fayoum. Wednesday evening coincides with the weekly prayer meeting held by Pope Tawadros II at St Mark’s, which is usually attended by hundreds of the Coptic congregation.
The Fayoum Copts were protesting against Anba Abra’am’s declarations that there had been no attack against the church or the Copts of the village of Seresna, Fayoum, and that any dispute with the village Muslims had been owing to the folly of the village priest Fr Dumadius Habib. The Bishop consequently suspended Fr Dumadius.
The protestors described Anba Abra’am’s declarations on Seresna as “inaccurate”, and denounced his suspension of Fr Dumadius. “There was a Muslim attack against the church in Seresna; the damages by the fire that was set to the church are still there to speak for it,” Mina Sobhy, one of the Seresna Coptic protestors told Watani. “Why does Anba Abra’am insist this did not happen? Is he under pressure from the Islamists?” Sobhy asked.
Peace is back in Seresna following the riots that led to the attack against the church back on 15 February, but Seresna Copts want Fr Dumadius back. “He served well and committed no harm,” the protestors said. “We want him back. There is no reason to warrant his suspension.”
