A workshop held in Cairo by UN-Habitat jointly with the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP), in collaboration with Egypt’s Ministry of Housing, discussed a project for an integrated transport system for Greater Cairo. ITDP is a global nonprofit that provides technical expertise to accelerate the growth of sustainable transport and urban development around the world.
Participating in the workshop were representatives from Egypt’s ministries of housing and transport, as well as the international expert in transport and road development Michael King from Buri Happold.
The focus of the discussions was the development of designs for high quality facilities for bicycling and pedestrians in central Cairo.
A joint programme between the Ministry of Housing and Urban Communities, the Ministry of Transport, the United Nations Development Programme and UN-Habitat, aims at increasing the capacity for public transport across the Greater Cairo Region agglomeration whilst integrating it with existing modes of travel. It is a two-tiered project with the primary goal being the development and implementation of a Bus Rapid Transit system and the subsequent promotion of greater non-motorised transport infrastructure in Cairo. The concept aims to integrate various existing transport infrastructure – namely, the Metro system and the Cairo Transport Authority Bus Lines – with low-cost, low-infrastructure systems, in order to reduce traffic congestion.
