UNESCO regional office in Cairo has organised a celebration to mark the 8th edition of World Radio Day; the day marks a time where people around the world celebrate radio and how it shapes our lives. The celebration was held at the Egyptian National Commission for UNESCO in the satellite city 6th October, in collaboration with the UNESCO club at the Cairo University’s Faculty of Economics and Political Science (FEPS).
On its website, UNESCO posted that: “Radio informs, transforms and unites us. It brings together people and communities from all backgrounds to foster positive dialogue for change. More specifically, radio is the perfect medium to counter the appeals for violence and the spread of conflict, especially in regions potentially more exposed to such realities.
“On that basis, World Radio Day 2019 (13 February annually) celebrated the theme of “Dialogue, Tolerance and Peace”. Broadcasts that provide a platform for dialogue and democratic debate over issues, such as migration or violence against women, can help to raise awareness among listeners and inspire understanding for new perspectives in paving the way for positive action.”
UNESCO organised a competition under the title of “Link is external”—an international competition for radio stations.
Two radio stations broadcasted live, including Radio UNESCO, a temporary radio station dedicated to World Radio Day. In addition, a total of 10 “Speed Workshops” were offered for all to gain hands-on experience in radio production.
A number of training workshops on radio editing, programmes production, and interactive presentation were also held live to highlight the role of radio in ensuring freedom of expression for all.
