Members of the constituent assembly charged with drafting the constitution have elected the members, coordinators and deputies of the various specialised committees that should aid the main panel.
The constituent assembly committees include one for rights and freedoms, with Judge Edward Ghaleb, secretary-general of the Coptic Orthodox Melli (Community) Council, as its coordinator, one for Egypt’s ruling regime, another for the basic components of the constitution, one for suggestions and communal communications, and one concerned with the supervisory authorities.
The committee for the basic components of the constitution includes 28 members, among whom is the Salafi leader Sheikh Mohamed Hassaan, Egypt’s former Mufti Dr Nasr Farid Wassel, Dr Abdel-Rahman Bar of the MB guidance bureau, the Salafi Sheikh Yasser Borhami, the Islamic scholar Selim al-Awwa and the Coptic Orthodox Bishop of Tanta Anba Bola.
The ruling regime committee includes 37 members, among whom is General Mamdouh Shahine, member of the Military Council, the Muslim Brotherhood leaders Essam al-Erian and Sobhi Saleh, head of the Evangelical Church the Rev. Safwat al-Bayadi, the writer Ms Manar al-Shorbagui, and Ahmed Maher, founder of the 6th April movement.
The supervisory authorities committee includes Mamdouh Wali, head of the Journalists’ Syndicate, Emad Abdel-Ghafour, head of the Salafi al-Nour Party and Mohamed Anwar al-Sadat.
The rights and freedoms committee includes 24 members, most prominent of whom are Edward Ghaleb, Anba Yohanna Qulta of the Coptic Catholic Church, Samir Morqos who is deputy to Cairo governor, the poet Farouq Guweida, and former head of the Arab League Amr Moussa.
The suggestions and communal communications committee includes the female activist Omaima Kamel, Ayman Nour, Nader Bakkar and Khaled al-Azhari.
