At an investment of USD300 million, the east Cairo satellite town of Shorouq will be getting an integrated project that serves urban, medical, and educational purposes.
To that end, a contract was signed on 21 February between Egypt’s New Urban Communities Authority (NUCA) and the Egyptian National Health Medical Services Company (NHMC), a subsidiary of the British NHMC Group. The UK’s NHMC Group is a conglomerate that operates in finance, healthcare and technology industries.
The contract was signed by Amin Ghoneim, Vice President of the NUCA for the Real Estate and Commercial Affairs Sector; and Nasser Michel Fouad, His Majesty’s Deputy Lieutenant of Cheshire and Chairman of NHMC. Attending the signing ceremony were Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly; and Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities, Assem El-Gazzar.
According to the contract, NUCA allocates land for establishing an integrated urban, medical, and educational project in Shorouq.
The land amounts to 72 feddans [one feddan is 4,200 square metres], 65 per cent of it is to be a residential area, and 35 per cent for educational medical activity, which Dr Fouad said will bear the name of the Elysium Medical Educational City.
The medical city, Dr Fouad explained, will be established and managed in partnership with the University of Buckingham. It will house the first British schools of medicine, nursing, and physical therapy in the Middle East and Africa, and will feature the first private educational hospital affiliated with the University of Buckingham in the MENA region.
A hospital will be established in cooperation with Johnson & Johnson, Dr Fouad divulged, explaining that the world’s top-notch surgeons will be invited to perform intricate surgeries on the face, jaw, and knee. Furthermore, he said, a specialised medical area of 76-room capacity will be allocated for elderly persons care.
The project will also boast a sports academy under medical supervision for people with special needs, a British international school, and an integrated residential area that will include villas, residential apartments, hotel apartments, administrative buildings, and commercial malls.
The project is expected to provide some 2,000 job opportunities.
According to the Minister of Housing, the price of the land will be settled in US dollars through transfers from abroad, or in any other foreign currency that is among the foreign currencies listed in the official price list of the Central Bank of Egypt.
Noteworthy is that Egyptian expatriate doctors had persistently offered their services to Egypt in several ways. Their offers were taken seriously by the Egyptian government which promised to facilitate matters for them to do so, to benefit the Egyptian community.
