There, he met acting patriarch of the Coptic Orthodox Church Anba Pachomeus, and offered his condolences for the death last March of Pope Shenouda III.
Attending the meeting, which lasted for some 45 minutes, were the Reverend Dr Safwat al-Bayadi, head of the Evangelical Church in Egypt; Anba Bouros Fahim, assistant to the Coptic Catholic patriarch in Egypt Cardinal Antonius Naguib; Bishop Nicholas Antonius of the Greek Orthodox Church in Egypt; and Bishop Mounir Hanna of the Episcopal Church in Egypt. Also on hand were Anba Moussa the Coptic Orthodox Bishop of Youth; Anba Yu’annis Bishop-General and secretary to the late Pope Shenouda III; and Bishop-General Anba Makarius.
The Carter Center, a monitoring group with headquarters in Atlanta, sent 22 election witnesses to observe the presidential election. Carter offered his wishes that the presidential elections should bring democracy and peace, in a State which respects human rights and does not discriminate between its citizens. He talked with Anba Pachomeus about the elections for a new Coptic Orthodox pope, which are expected to take place next October and November.
