Today, Friday 25 September, Pope Tawadros II left Cairo to the Ethiopian capital
Addis Ababa for a week-long visit to take part in the celebrations of the Feast of
the Holy Cross on 27 September. This is Pope Tawadros’s first visit to Ethiopia,
and is upon an invitation from the Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church,
Abune Mathias I.
Accompanying Pope Tawadros on his visit is a large delegation of Coptic Bishops:
Anba Bishoi, Bishop of Damietta, Kafr al-Sheikh and al-Barari; Anba Hedra,
Metropolitan of Aswan; Anba Sawiris, Bishop and Abbot of the Monastery of the
Holy Virgin, known as al-Muharraq Monastery; Anba Pimen, Bishop of Naqada
and Qus; Anba Kyrillos, Bishop and Abbot of Mar-Mina Monastery in Maryut;
Anba Dumadius, Bishop of 6th of October; Tamav Takla, Mother Superior of Mar-
Girgis Convent in Old Cairo; and papal secretary Father Angaelos.
Pope Tawadros will be visiting the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Addis Ababa, Our
Lady Mary of Zion in the northern town of Axum, and a number other churches
and monasteries. He will also visit Sebeta Getesemani Nunnery, and will meet the
Coptic Orthodox congregation in Ethiopia.
The Pope’s schedule includes visits to the Egyptian Embassy in Addis Ababa, the
National Museum, the Patriarchal Museum, and Lalibela Churches. He will also
open the Canadian Coptic Hospital.
