On Thursday 7 February, 18-year-old Marina Girgis Eweida was reported missing. Eweida is a young Coptic woman from the village of al-Nawaser in Esna, south of Luxor. On the same day and the day that followed, a number of Copts gathered in front of Esna police station protesting the disappearance of Marina, and demanding that the police should find her and bring her home. They claimed that a young Muslim man from the village had abducted her.
According to one of Eweida’s relatives, the girl had ridden a tuk-tuk to visit relations. She never made her visit, nor did she return home.
The police are questioning the family of the young man who allegedly abducted Eweida, but he managed to flee before he could be arrested.
