Last Sunday, the Supreme Administrative Court ruled that Muslim converts who revert to their original Christian religion are entitled to have their Christian religion cited in the official papers, mainly IDs and birth certificates.
The Court criticised the Interior Ministry for not implementing a previous ruling that was issued last January to the same effect.
“We cannot close the doors, especially after the positive changes in the wake of the 25 January Revolution,” the court said, stressing that the Interior Ministry should implement the law without the need to wait for ruling on each individual case.
There are no official statistics on the returnees to Christianity. However, unofficial estimates indicate their numbers may be as high as some 100,000 .
