Egypt was chosen to open the programme of ‘nations’ cultures’ in the 59th Children’s Camps International (Orlyonok) in the city of Krasnodar, Russia.
Egypt Day began at 8 AM with an Egyptian ‘ululation’ marking the camp woke-up call on the camp’s internal radio-broadcast system.
In three languages: Russian, Arabic, and English, ‘Egypt Day’ introduced campers from various countries to Egypt’s civilisation through three scenes by Shady Adel; Habiba Sherif; and Amr Khaled. The three scenes were performed at the same time, depicting the Egyptian myth of Isis and Osiris; the astronomical phenomenon of the sun rays penetrating the temple of Abu Simbel, south of Aswan, to the inner chamber to illuminate the face of the statue of Ramses II (1278 –1213BC), an event that occurs twice every year: on 22 October and 22 February at sunrise. The third scene displayed official replicas of a number of Egyptian antiquities, and screened a number of documentaries on tourist and historical landmarks in Egypt.
According to Sherif Gad, head of the Egyptian delegation and director of the Cultural Programme at the Russian Centre in Cairo (RCC), the Egyptian children performed the dance “al-faraana” (Pharaohs)” by choreographers Tahany Hassan, professor at the Cairo Ballet Academy. At the end of their performance, theatre rang with loud applause.
At the end of the day, the Egyptian delegation presented souvenirs to the attendants. “As expected, Egypt’s brilliant performances has stunned everyone at camp, said Yelena Victorovna, the camp director.
