The most recent Salafi fatwa has aroused huge debate and ruffled not a few feathers. The fatwa, by Sheikh Yasser Burhami, says that it is sinful for a Muslim taxi driver to give a priest a lift to church. In doing so, the fatwa said, the Muslim taxi driver—or any Muslim driver—would be acting in such a way as to encourage apostasy and vice. Copts were almost too dumbfounded to comment; but Muslim moderates gave the fatwa a fair share of criticism for its petty, extremist view.
The managing editor of the Cairo daily al-Shurouq, Emad Eddin Hussein, wrote in his daily column that the fatwa constitutes a threat to Egypt’s national security, and is poised to create divisions between Muslims and non-Muslims. Hussein called upon the president to keep good upon his promise to be a “president for all Egyptians” by taking prompt legal action against Sheikh Burhami.
