The three major churches in Egypt: the Coptic Orthodox, Coptic Catholic and the Evangelical Church have officially informed the presidency that they are not taking part in the National Dialogue which President Mursi has called for. The Dialogue should start this evening and will be broadcast live on TV satellite.
Rev. Andrea Zaki, Deputy Head of the Evangelical Church in Egypt, explained that the three Churches decided not to participate in this round of the dialogue because all the suggestions that were made by their representatives during previous dialogue sessions were never taken seriously by the presidency.
According to Rev. Zaki, the three Churches demanded an audience with the President in order for them to present the Churches’ demands regarding reservations on several articles of the Constitution.
“Even though we have declined to participate in the national dialogue, we are praying that it would succeed, in order for our beloved nation to overcome the current crisis,” said Rev. Zaki.
The National Salvation Front, the largest secular force on the Egyptian political arena, has announced that it is not sitting in to tonight’s dialogue table, its spokesman Rifaat al-Said also announced that the Front is boycotting the upcoming parliamentary elections, scheduled to start next April.
