In a governor reshuffle announced yesterday 30 August, 21 of Egypt’s 27 governorates got new governors. The north eastern governorate of Dumyat, Damietta, which stand at the mouth of the River Nile as it flows into the Mediterranean through the eastern branch of the Delta, got as governor Manal Awad Mikhail, a 51 year-old PhD in veterinary medicine who holds the State Encouragement Prize in academic studies for 20017. Until her current appointment, Dr Mikhail was deputy to Giza governor, in which capacity she was responsible for the development of disadvantaged communities.
Dr Mikhail is the first ever Coptic woman as governor, and the second Egyptian woman to hold such a post. The first was Nadia Abdu who was appointed Governor of Beheira, west of the Nile Delta, in February 2017; but has been replaced in the recent reshuffle.
