The UN has honoured 180 Egyptian peacekeepers for their efforts to maintain security in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The honourees are part of the UN Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO). They were granted the UN medals for their efforts to maintain peace and security in the Central African country.
The ceremony was attended by the Egyptian ambassador in Kinshasa, Yosry Mohamed Khalil Mohamed, and other civil and military officials. Speaking at the honouring ceremony, the head of the honoured EGYFPU-2 police force Alaa Eldin Badri said that serving under the UN was a great honour.
Egypt is a longstanding and committed contributor to UN peacekeeping operations. Egypt’s first contribution to UN peacekeeping was in 1960 in the Congo. Since then, Egypt has contributed to 37 UN missions with over 30,000 peacekeepers, deployed in 24 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe.
