Among its busy summer cultural programme, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA)—the modern day incarnation of the prestigious Greco Roman era Library of Alexandria, which was an unparalleled centre of knowledge in its times—is holding a number of Culturama shows entitled “Egypt… The Heritage and Civilisation” throughout the month of August at its Cairo venue, Bayt al-Sinnari, Sinnari House. Bayt al-Sinnari, an 18th-century mansion in the Islamic quarter of Cairo. With its open courtyards, wide rooms and halls, and shady passageways, the stone house is a splendid sample of Islamic architecture, and is used as a cultural outlet by the BA.
The Culturama shows chronicle Egypt’s history and civilisation over some 5000 years, highlighting the ancient Egyptian, Coptic, and Islamic heritage, and focusing on the achievements of the most prominent kings and rulers, in addition to giving a full description of the most significant ancient buildings and sites from the Coptic, Islamic, and modern periods.
The shows feature a display of one of the oldest and most important expeditions in history: the expedition sent by the Egyptian Queen Hatshepsut who reigned as Pharaoh in 1479 -1458BC, to the land of Punt, modern-day Somalia and Eritrea. The expedition was depicted by Queen Hatshepsut on the walls of her temple in Deir al-Bahari.
The shows will also include a tour of the Islamic era al-Muizz Street through virtual maps that demonstrate various remarkable archaeological sites.
The shows will take place on Mondays and Tuesdays, from 9 to 24 August 2021, at 7:00 pm.
Culturama is a term used to denote a panorama of heritage in an interactive show prepared by the Centre for Documentation of Cultural and Natural Heritage CULTNAT, a research centre affiliated to the BA. The show is presented through nine digital screens that are the first of their kind in the world. Culturama gathers a wealth of information on natural and cultural heritage in a harmonious, innovative manner, in addition to the use of multimedia and modern screening technology.
