Egypt’s Ministry of Health announced on the evening of 7 September that it has detected the first case of Monkeypox in the country. The patient, a 42-year-old Egyptian man who has residency in a European country and was there recently, has been quarantined in one of the Ministry of Health hospitals designated for isolation. The patient is in a stable condition, the Ministry revealed, adding that all required health and preventive measures have been applied to those who had been in contact with him, according to the treatment and follow up protocol recommended by the World Health Organisation.
The Ministry said that the case was detected through the epidemiological monitoring procedures it regularly carries.
Since last July, the Ministry has raised the level of surveillance and the availability of diagnostic tools in all Egyptian land and sea ports, and also raised awareness and training of medical personnel on diagnosis and referral.
