In anticipation of receiving a certificate from the World Health Organisation (WHO) pronouncing the country malaria-free, Egypt’s Deputy Minister of Health in Aswan, Hanan Anwar, recently received a delegation from WHO. The Aswan region is the southern gateway of Egypt that connects it to Africa.
Dr Anwar noted that Egypt’s political leadership is keen to improve the quality of health services provided to Egyptians; this being a top priority, she said, and one of the most important strategic goals of Egypt’s Vision 2030.
The WHO delegation was received by Dr Amany al-Habashy, Head of the Central Department of Endemic Diseases at the Ministry of Health. Accompanying her were Mustafa Abul-Magd, Director-General of Preventive Medicine Department in Aswan, and Raymond Bushra, Director of the Malaria Control Department in Aswan.
Dr Abul-Magd explained that Egypt was able to achieve that commendable position of being free of malaria through staunch efforts by the Ministry of Health at running extensive anti-malaria vaccination campaigns. The vaccine was administered free of charge. This, he said, worked to increasingly reduce the spread of the disease until Egypt was able to exterminate it, and submit a file to WHO requesting declaration that the country is malaria-free.
