With the aim of lending support to Egypt’s work in offering treatment and health services to injured and sick Palestinians in Egyptian hospitals, an agreement has been signed between the World Health Organisation’s Egypt office and the Japanese Ambassador in Cairo.
The signing ceremony was attended by Minister of International Cooperation, Rania al-Mashat; Japanese Ambassador to Cairo, Oka Hiroshi; Executive Director of WHO for the Eastern Mediterranean Region, Hanan Balkhi; as well as senior officials from WHO and the Egyptian Health Ministry.
According to Ministry of Health spokesperson Hossam Abdel-Ghaffar, the agreement aims to ensure Japanese support to the Egyptian Ministry of Health in treating sick and injured Palestinians from the Gaza Strip. The Japanese government’s aid includes medical supplies, surgical tools, artificial joints, hospital beds, and radiology equipment. The Japanese government also offers training programmes for exchange of experience between medical teams.
For her part, Ms Mashat commended the efforts of the Japanese government and WHO, in cooperation with the Egyptian Ministry of Health, in offering direly needed medical support to the Palestinians.
Ambassador Hiroshi expressed happiness that his country contributes to Egyptian efforts and WHO on the front lines of humanitarian aid, to provide treatment for the Palestinians evacuated from Gaza, hoping that this medical support would help treat Palestinian patients and premature babies in Egyptian hospitals.
Nima Saeed Abed, WHO Representative in Egypt, said that Egypt had always provided support to countries afflicted by conflict or disaster. With the escalation of the crisis in Gaza, he said, Egypt has become a hub for delivering humanitarian aid and providing free treatment to the sick and injured in Gaza. The generous contribution of Japan enables more sustainable support for Palestinian patients, he said.
