Today, 6 October 2022 Egypt marks her 49th Victory Day, the day the Egyptian army crossed the Suez Canal into Sinai, and brought down the “indomitable” Bar-Lev Line which the Israelis had insisted would be a graveyard for Egyptians. The 18-day battle that followed and the consequent truce paved the way for a peace treaty with Israel in 1979, through which Sinai was returned to Egypt following six years of Israeli occupation.
Victory Day became for Egypt a day of national dignity and pride.
This year, in addition to the national and military celebrations of Victory Day, churches across Egypt are ringing their bells on 6 October at 2:05pm, in joyous commemoration of the moment the Suez Canal crossing started.
