On satellite TV, Youssef Sidhom, Editor-in-Chief of ++Watani++, said that no one can overlook the substantial role that was played by Pope Shenouda vis-à-vis the Egyptian Church. He was a true pastor, Sidhom said. He carried the Church from being a very local to opening up to the world. Sidhom also said that under Pope Shenouda the Church was very keen to preserve the Egyptian identity of the Copts, whether inside Egypt or in the diaspora.
Pope Shenouda, said Sidhom, played and implicated the Church in playing a significant national role. He persuaded Copts not to resort to violence to deal with their demands, and urged them to create and nurture compassionate relations with their fellow Muslims.
