Father Sergius Sergius, deputy of the Coptic Patriarchate in Cairo, announced that the tombs department at the Coptic Orthodox Church has banned visits to tombs during Easter. Those in charge of tomb yards, he said, should close the gates, and open only in case a burial needs to performed. The decision, he said, comes as an attempt to avoid crowds in order to stem the spread of coronavirus.
Egyptians hold a time-honoured tradition of visiting their dead on feast days, and distributing food to the poor.
Until 5 April, Egypt reported 1173 COVID-19 cases among which 78 died and 247 recovered.
