Today is seeing several rallies by Coptic movements and rights activists demanding that the law should be enforced in the case of the attacks against the Copts of Dahshur, and the looting and torching of their homes and properties. They demanded that they should be compensated for their losses and allowed to go back to their hometown, denouncing the discrimination against them and the absence of law enforcement.
Rallies were organised by, among others, the Egyptian s against Religious Discrimination (MARED), the Coalition of Egypt’s Copts, and the Maspero Youth Union.
At the same time, the Beit al-Eila (literally, the Family Home)—the commission affiliated to al-Azhar and concerned with achiving social peace and peaceful coexistence between Muslims and Copts in Egypt, has held a meeting to discuss the Dahshur incident. The meeting was presided over by the Grand Imam of al-Azhar Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayyib, and attended by acting patriarch Anba Pachomeus. The participants took a decision to meet President Mursi and demand that he should see that the problem is resolved in a way that ensures the Copts’ rights.
