As per a Memorandum of Understanding signed between Egypt and China in 2016, Egypt has received energy-conserving goods worth 20 million yuan from China, as a grant from the Chinese government. The goods, which aim at boosting Egypt’s capacity to confront climate change, consist of solar street lighting poles, solar home generation system, LED bulbs and tubes, and energy-saving air conditioners.
The goods were received in the second quarter of last year, and today Egyptian Minister of Environment, Yasmine Fuad, and Chinese Ambassador to Cairo Liao Liqiang, witnessed the signing ceremony of the goods receipt certificate.
The goods offered by China, Dr Fuad highlighted, enhance energy efficiency in Egypt, as one of the basic technological solutions that guarantee the use of sustainable and renewable energy resources. This contributes to reducing global greenhouse gas emissions and increasing energy efficiency, thus preserving natural resources. Dr Fuad commended China’s role as an active partner to Egypt, which contributes to reaching realistic solutions to climate change issues, in order to empower the principles of the Paris Climate Agreement, and other climate related agreements, as well as Egypt’s transition to green economy.
For his part, Chinese Ambassador to Cairo Liao Liqiang stressed China’s keenness to cooperate and partner with Egypt on all levels, highlighting Egypt’s important role in the heart of the Middle East, the Islamic world and Africa. He applauded the milestone reached by Egypt in developing the environment and the climate sectors. He said that the energy-conserving goods offered by China will contribute to promoting the transformation of the energy consumption pattern in Egypt to a low-carbon pattern, and progress towards green transformation.
The Egyptian Minister of Environment invited the Chinese side to participate in the first conference to be held by Egypt on environmental and climate investment next July. She expressed her aspiration for the participation of Chinese companies to explore opportunities for partnership, cooperation and investment in many promising fields such as waste management, new and renewable energy and ecotourism.
