Egypt has received two mobile clinic laboratories for coronavirus testing from the United States, as shown on a video published by Egyptian Military Spokesman Gharib Abdel-Hafez.
The video explained that the two mobile clinics were donated to Egypt to help the country fight COVID-19, and that they would join Egypt’s Armed Forces’ Medical Service Department which works in tandem with the Egyptian government to combat and curb the pandemic.
A reception ceremony was held by the Armed Forces to honour the gift which, according to Director of the Armed Forces’ Medical Service Department Hisham al-Sheshtawy, expressed the US solidarity with Egypt.
US Ambassador to Cairo Jonathan Cohen who attended the ceremony said the gift aimed at boosting cooperation and partnership between the two friendly countries, expressing his appreciation for Egypt’s role in facing COVID-19 and limiting its spread.
Egypt and the US have exchanged medical aid during the pandemic, with the US dispatching some 12 million Pfizer vaccine doses to Egypt. In August 2020, the US donated 250 ventilators to intensive care units in Egypt’s hospitals and, in October the same year, announced it was providing over USD5 million in urgent coronavirus assistance to Egypt through the US Agency for International Development (USAID), bringing the total amount of assistance received up to USD55 million at the time.
At the outset of the pandemic, Egypt had sent a military plane loaded with medical supplies to the US as a gesture of solidarity.
