A fire erupted that Saturday 20 August in Alexandria’s Carrefour hypermarket and mall in the district of Muharram Bey on the outskirts of Alexandria claimed no casualties. Alexandria Governor Muhammad al-Sherif who rushed to the scene of the fire together with Health Minister Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar and Alexandria Security Director Khaled al-Barawi, said that five persons suffered from suffocation, including a fire fighter. They were treated on the spot. The Governor stressed there were no serious injuries.
The fire and dense black smoke caused panic among the mall’s visitors who scrambled out of the mall before firefighters arrived within a few minutes and extinguished the fire.
According to Muhammad Usama, an eyewitnesses, people were shocked to hear the sound of some explosion in the mall area that includes cinemas, restaurants, and games. Thankfully, it was before noon, so there were not many visitors there. Those who where inside rushed outside.
Initial investigations indicated that the fire broke out in the central air conditioning units on the rooftop of the building.
