French contemporary artist Hélène Bellenger hosted a workshop at SOMA Visual art gallery titled “Photography and Contemporary Art”, which ran from 7 to 10 December.
The event is part of SOMA’s ongoing collaboration with the Institut Français d’Égypte. The workshop’s goals were to explore the relationship between photography and contemporary art, analysing how they interrelate.
The workshop also aimed at putting a new view on photography taken for granted, such as selfies, news or advertising, inviting students to reflect on them in a new way. Students were encouraged to recycle and recreate artwork from photographs, with the final phase of the workshop exhibiting the finished pieces for further reflection.
Bellenger earned her diploma from the French National School of Photography and has exhibited at the Paris’s Agnès B. gallery and Binôme gallery in 2016 and 2017 respectively.
