Symposium al-Bahr
From 10 to 23 October, the Qaitbay Fort in Alexandria will act as a venue for “Symposium al-Ba7r (Bahr)” literally. The symposium, which is organised by the Fine Art Sector in Egypt jointly with Alexandria governorate, will host an international group of professional artists and photographers, and will be open to members of the public who may be interested in attending.
The aim of the symposium is to realise an exchange of new ideas in art between artists from different places in the world through several workshops. The participant artists will each bear the cost of travel from their countries to and from Alexandria, as well as the required tools: colours, fabrics, palettes, and others. Every artist will exhibit ten pieces of artwork; nine may be put up for sale at the end of the symposium, while one—which will be executed during the workshop—will be left for the Egyptian plastic arts sector.
Basic Motion
Inspired by the intensity of the traffic, the activity of the city and the liveliness of the people in Cairo, a collective exhibition entitled “Basic Motion” by the Swiss artist Anastasia Katsidis, together with Egyptian artists Ahmed Badry and Inas al-Sadiq was recently on show in Cairo.
The installation work of the three artists focused on the needs, wishes and fears in the everyday life of the Egyptian society. Sadiq especially tackled cohesion and traditions inside the family, Badry focused on the pressure of monthly bills, while Katsidis’ works centred on the wish to escape to a better life.
Children from Assiut
The results of the competition of the 9th Children’s Drawings Exhibition held in Japan were announced last July. Among the winners were 17 children from Assuit, Upper Egypt, who won awards and certificates of honour. Some 300 children under 18 years of age from the world over took part in the competition.
Mexican design
For an entire month that ended last Sunday, Alexandria’s 12th century Qaitbay Fort hosted the exhibition “The Wonders of Mexican Design”. The event was sponsored by the Egyptian Ministry of Culture and the Mexican Embassy.
Umm al-Donia
The passion for artistic expression is a strange and surprising thing. It has been shimmering in Dr al-Sayed M. al-Sayyad for years when he was practicing in various leading hospitals in Cairo. Now his talent for photography has fully blossomed after he retired in 2005. He started with shy participations in collective exhibitions at various cultural centers and now Villa Grey opens its doors to him for his first solo exhibition, during the month of Ramadan. Umm al-Donia is his original vision of old Cairo and Egypt, its architectural heritage as well as its people. The exhibition will run from 28 August to 30 September.
