Students from the Russian universities of Dagestan and Pyatigorsk arrived to Egypt to start a two-monts course with Assiut University (AU) to study Arabic and Islamic Civilisation. Ahmad Gaeis, Dean of the Assiut University, said the Russian group included 14 students, a coordinator, and a Russian language teacher. They began their visit to Egypt with a tour of Cairo’s historical landmarks: the Giza Pyramids, the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir, Saladin Citadel, and Old Cairo.
Throughout the past 23 years, AU has received 28 other student groups from Russian universities, to study Arabic language and Arab and Islamic civilisation. In 2008, the Center of Russian Language Study was established at AU, a fruit of continued cooperation with a number of Russian universities, with the main objective of introducing the study of Russian language and culture to Upper Egypt students and graduates, and conducting a joint academic programme between AU and universities in Russia.
