On 23 July 2018, Watani lost a dear member who had been close to the hearts of every one in the paper. Safwat Abdel-Halim, who started at Watani’s central editorial desk in 1969 and went on to be the paper’s Managing Editor till 2016, was among the most dedicated and competent who ever worked with the paper. He was a loving, affable man who enjoyed imparting knowledge and passing on precious experience. He mentored our young reporters, leaving a lasting imprint of compassion and wisdom. His sense of humour was legendary; he started his day at Watani by passing through every office for a warm hearted ‘good morning’ and a cool laugh with those inside. Only then would he start his work.
He was loved and cherished by all, his loss all the more sorrowful.
I extend my deepest condolences to Mr Abdel-Halim’s widow and life partner, and to his son and daughter and their families; also to every single member of the Watani family whose outpouring of sorrow at the loss of dear “Mr Safwat” was especially moving. May God rest his soul in peace.
