Former Egyptian People’s Assembly Speaker Ahmed Fathi Sorour died in the late hours of 5 April, aged 91. His death was announced by his son Tariq Fathi Sorour on his Facebook page.
Born in July 1932 in Qena Governorate, Mr Sorour was raised in a family that valued science and politics. He graduated from Cairo University with a law degree in 1953, then obtained a PhD in international law in 1961 from the same university. He became a professor at Cairo University, and rose to head the department of International Law in 1981.
Mr Sorour was Minister of Education from 1986 to 1990, and served as Speaker of the People’s Assembly from 1991 until 2011.
He is survived by his wife, Afaf Abdel-Rahman; his son, Tariq, and two daughters.
