Adel Soliman, 48, who murdered the Copt Youssef Lamei, was executed at Burg al-Arab Prison on 30 December 2018.
Alexandria Criminal Court had in February 2018 handed Soliman a death sentence for killing Youssef Lamei, a Coptic shop owner in his fifties, in Alexandria on 2 January 2017. The pretext for the murder was that Lamei sold liquor in his shop, a practice condemned by Islam.
The bearded Adel Soliman, an Islamist, sneaked into the coffeeshop where Lamei was sitting, came up from behind him and slashed his throat twice with a large knife. During his trial, he was unrepentant saying that selling liquor is a sin in Islam and that, given another chance he would again kill Lamei. Soliman was convicted of premeditated murder and sentenced to death.
After the execution, the Borg al-Arab prison transferred the body to the morgue, to be handed to the family of Soliman.
